Analysis of Grudge 3 trailer

The genre of the film Grudge 3 is horror/thriller, this film is the third installment of the Grudge series. The storyline carries on from the second film which is called 'Grudge 2'.
The narrative of Grudge 3 is that the curse from the previous films moves to an apartment in Chicago, and it kills anyone who enters this apartment. The only way the curse can be stopped is from a Japenese woman. The ghost is a woman, she is completly white with long black hair and she kills who ever she finds and who ever has disturbed her brutally. For example the ghost follows the person and scares them and then she kills the person brutally. For example in one scene she grabs the boy and breaks every bone in his body and no one can explain what has happened to him. These kind of attacks in the film are quite frequent leaving the viewers astonsihed and wanting more.
Although this is the third installment of the film the trailer does give the audience an overview of the two films. The aim of this is so if someone has not seen Grudge one and two by seeing this trailer and seeing what happens in third one they would want to see how the curse starts and they will watch the first one. The trailer starts with some fast scenes of Grudge 3, and so if someone has not seen the second and first they will want to see them before they see the third one. There is a voice over to explain what happens in the first and second film. The voiceover does not continually say what happens in the first and second film the voiceover only says 'then it was reborn', and then there are quick shots of what happens in the first and second film. Throughout the trailer they show the main ghost that kills everyone, and so this image gets drilled in the heads of the audience and they will never forget it because they have to remember it in all three installments of the film. The trailer does not give all the storyline away and it does not tell the audience if the curse will stop or if it will carry on. For example one character in the trailer says, 'if the curse is not stopped more people will die'. This makes the audience understand some of the storyline, because they will know the curse needs to be stopped or people will die and they will understand the motive of the film which is if the curse will stop or not. In the trailer there are lots of different shots of what the ghost does to its victims so the audience will know what the film will be about.
The trailer starts with an quick overview of the first and second film and some of the actors and actresses in them. For example in the trailer Sarah Michelle Gellar's name comes up. If people will see her name they will know it is a good film because she is a good actress who got involved. After the trailer has shown a quick overview of the first and second films the rest of the trailer focuses on the third film. It shows some of the events that are going to happen in the third film, but it does not tell the audience if the curse will stop. Towards the end of the trailer a woman says 'the curse must be stopped or more people will die' and in the film she says this earlier on. In the trailer she says this at the end so after the audience have watched this it will have big impact on them and they will remember that the only way people can stop dying is if the curse is stopped.
In the trailer there are a toal of 47 shots. The shots are very quick and most of them last between 1 and 2 seconds.
Throughout the trailer the editing is very quick. This is because the trailer jams together the main things that happen in the first, sceond and thrid film in a 1min and 14sec trailer. If the trailer is quick then there is more things that the audience could see and it is not boring for them as well.
In the trailer there are a lot of wipes and fade to black transitions. For example at the start of the trailer there is a fade to black, this is so the audience can prepare themseleves for what is going to happen in the trailer. The fade to black also creates suspense and tension as well. In the trailer there are also a lot of close-ups of the eye of the ghost. This does not have a specific or a clear meaning, but it could show that once the ghost has its victim it will always be watching them and it will not leave them alone.
The voice over is mainly at the start of trailer, for example it says 'first it was unleashed'. This is so the audience know the order of events and what happens in the first and second films. Towards the end there is no voiceover because the audience would have understood fully what the first and second films are about and what they should expect in the third film.
The text is mainly at the end of the trailer, for example one of the text says 'no matter what you hear' and after this text there is a ghost and she is doing the famous screech that is in the first and second installments of the Grudge series.
The soundtrack in the trailer has a fast pace to it, this is because the editing of the trailer is really fast and so a fast soundtrack will suit it and make the trailer more scary. The soundtrack has alot of static sounds, the static sounds show how the ghost appears and disappears.
The main camera shots that are used are close-ups of the one eye of the ghost which shows the ghost is always watching them. In the trailer at 0:26 seconds there are series of quick jump cuts of the ghosts hand on someone. It was unsual to see jump cuts in a trailer although it was fast.
