Film Poster Draft

The main image that is going to be on the poster is going to be of the ghost because she is the main character in the trailer that haunts everyone and the storyline is based on her. The ghost is going to be in the forest so there are going to be trees behind her, this adds to the genre of horror/thriller because the forest is isolated. The picture is going to be black and white, because those are the colours associated with the horror genre, and when i was doing research on existing horror/thriller posters most of them were black and white. Most of the writing on the poster is going to be red and white. This is because when researching existing posters the main colours of the writing were white and red. The red will show murder and blood, and the white colour shows the ghost may look like a normal girl and pure and innocent but she is really evil and deadly. I have also decided to add production information at the bottom of the poster, this is because in posters like 'Insidious' there was production information at the bottom of the poster, this gives the poster a realisitic touch. At the top of the poster i have added 'from the makers of paranormal activity and Insidious' i saw this in the Insidious poster. This is a selling point of films because when people see that it was directed from previously successful films they will want to watch it.

Magazine Front Cover Draft

I have decided to name the magazine Empire and it is going to be bold and red. The straplines are going to be white and red and the main image is going to be of the ghost, it is going to black and white and it is going to of a close-up of the ghost. The magazine that i was constantly looking at to produce my own magazine was 'Total Film' magazine, the magazine had a chilling and horror touch to it because of things like the colours used and of the black and white image.

Possezed storyline

A group of four close friends come across an old book called 'The possezed' and they decide to read it together, they sit around a table together and put the book in the middle of the table with candles around it. They read out loud a curse from the book without knowing what it means. Little they know that once they read the curse they will be possessed by the ghost and the ghost will never leave them alone and she will scare and make their life hell until they find part two of the book.
The possezed book is an ancient book that goes back to the Egyptian period. The book belonged to a superior family where the evil spirits possessed their ancient. One of the ancients survived from a tragic event that burned his family alive. In the book he was recording all the possessive behaviour his family were experiencing. The book was travelled down by his family but was never talked about, and no one opened or read this book apart from the four friends. If somone finds the book and reads it they will be cursed and they will experience a rollarcoaster of tortourous events that will scare them and that could be fatal. Until someone finds part 2 of the book the ghost will not leave them alone and she may even kill them.
****
One of the girl took the book from her mother's room without knowing the consequences of her actions. The group of friends decide to read the book together and they begin to recite some words, little they know that as soon as they begin to recite this curse they will be possessed. The group of friends recite the follwoing words: 'Battle not with evil spirits lest ye become a evil spirit; and if you gaze into the eyes of the evil spirit,
the evil will come in to you.'

After they read this nothing happens to them so they think it is fake and they have nothing to worry about. However the next day a series of unexpected events happen....

When Sapna goes under the table to get her phone she feels something going up on the table, she puts her hand on top of the table and she feels the ghost. When Rosina is in the bathroom she is washing her face and she hears something behind the curtains in the bathroom, she moves the curtains and she sees the ghost there. Many of these events happen throughout the film.

At the end Sapna is in the kitchen making tea and when she looks up she sees the ghost right next to her in the reflection in the window.

Will the friends find part two of the book, or will it be a fatal ending?

Production Logo- 'SQK Motion Pictures'

This is our production logo and we named it 'SQK Motion Pictures'. 'SQK' stands for Showcase Qasim and Komal motion pictures. We decided to name it this because the word 'showcase' suggests that our trailer and production work is something we want everyone to see, and then we put our names because the trailer, magazine and poster is made by us.
We chose to have a picture of a Jaguar because they are scary, firece and dangerous animals. The Jaguar links in with the genre of our trailer because out trailer is horror/thriller and we want it to scare people. And so when people look at out production logo and see the picture of the Jaguar they will know our trailer is horror/thriller.

Analysis of Grudge 3 trailer

The genre of the film Grudge 3 is horror/thriller, this film is the third installment of the Grudge series. The storyline carries on from the second film which is called 'Grudge 2'.
The narrative of Grudge 3 is that the curse from the previous films moves to an apartment in Chicago, and it kills anyone who enters this apartment. The only way the curse can be stopped is from a Japenese woman. The ghost is a woman, she is completly white with long black hair and she kills who ever she finds and who ever has disturbed her brutally. For example the ghost follows the person and scares them and then she kills the person brutally. For example in one scene she grabs the boy and breaks every bone in his body and no one can explain what has happened to him. These kind of attacks in the film are quite frequent leaving the viewers astonsihed and wanting more.
Although this is the third installment of the film the trailer does give the audience an overview of the two films. The aim of this is so if someone has not seen Grudge one and two by seeing this trailer and seeing what happens in third one they would want to see how the curse starts and they will watch the first one. The trailer starts with some fast scenes of Grudge 3, and so if someone has not seen the second and first they will want to see them before they see the third one. There is a voice over to explain what happens in the first and second film. The voiceover does not continually say what happens in the first and second film the voiceover only says 'then it was reborn', and then there are quick shots of what happens in the first and second film. Throughout the trailer they show the main ghost that kills everyone, and so this image gets drilled in the heads of the audience and they will never forget it because they have to remember it in all three installments of the film. The trailer does not give all the storyline away and it does not tell the audience if the curse will stop or if it will carry on. For example one character in the trailer says, 'if the curse is not stopped more people will die'. This makes the audience understand some of the storyline, because they will know the curse needs to be stopped or people will die and they will understand the motive of the film which is if the curse will stop or not. In the trailer there are lots of different shots of what the ghost does to its victims so the audience will know what the film will be about.
The trailer starts with an quick overview of the first and second film and some of the actors and actresses in them. For example in the trailer Sarah Michelle Gellar's name comes up. If people will see her name they will know it is a good film because she is a good actress who got involved. After the trailer has shown a quick overview of the first and second films the rest of the trailer focuses on the third film. It shows some of the events that are going to happen in the third film, but it does not tell the audience if the curse will stop. Towards the end of the trailer a woman says 'the curse must be stopped or more people will die' and in the film she says this earlier on. In the trailer she says this at the end so after the audience have watched this it will have big impact on them and they will remember that the only way people can stop dying is if the curse is stopped.
In the trailer there are a toal of 47 shots. The shots are very quick and most of them last between 1 and 2 seconds.
Throughout the trailer the editing is very quick. This is because the trailer jams together the main things that happen in the first, sceond and thrid film in a 1min and 14sec trailer. If the trailer is quick then there is more things that the audience could see and it is not boring for them as well.
In the trailer there are a lot of wipes and fade to black transitions. For example at the start of the trailer there is a fade to black, this is so the audience can prepare themseleves for what is going to happen in the trailer. The fade to black also creates suspense and tension as well. In the trailer there are also a lot of close-ups of the eye of the ghost. This does not have a specific or a clear meaning, but it could show that once the ghost has its victim it will always be watching them and it will not leave them alone.
The voice over is mainly at the start of trailer, for example it says 'first it was unleashed'. This is so the audience know the order of events and what happens in the first and second films. Towards the end there is no voiceover because the audience would have understood fully what the first and second films are about and what they should expect in the third film.
The text is mainly at the end of the trailer, for example one of the text says 'no matter what you hear' and after this text there is a ghost and she is doing the famous screech that is in the first and second installments of the Grudge series.
The soundtrack in the trailer has a fast pace to it, this is because the editing of the trailer is really fast and so a fast soundtrack will suit it and make the trailer more scary. The soundtrack has alot of static sounds, the static sounds show how the ghost appears and disappears.
The main camera shots that are used are close-ups of the one eye of the ghost which shows the ghost is always watching them. In the trailer at 0:26 seconds there are series of quick jump cuts of the ghosts hand on someone. It was unsual to see jump cuts in a trailer although it was fast.

Analysis of Paranormal Activity 3 trailer

Paranormal Activity 3 is best described to come under the genre of horror. This is because it has thrilling scenes which involves ghosts, possession, tense and reality which makes it scarier for the viewer.
The narrative of the feature of the film is advertising two young children spending family time with their father and mother – the father is filming his children playing on the trampoline. This all seems normal therefore it is balanced – equilibrium. Out of nowhere someone comes towards the camera with big, beady eyes. This relates to previous movies (Paranormal activity 1&2), this may catch the audience eyes to conceive about the ghost or that person.
The narrative refers back to the ‘normal’ stage for the family – the family time that the father has recorded. After that, there is a shocking and thrilling extract from the movie where someone is pulled out the room with no strings attached therefore this relates to the name of the movie as this is an example of a paranormal activity.
There seems to be a lot of static scenes which sort of acts as a transition for the trailer to move on to the next extract to tell the audience the narrative of this movie.
Again, the narrative at this point refers back to family time playing in the back garden and this time hula-hooping which tells the audience everything seems to be normal.
Furthermore the trailer reveals when this movie is releasing. And it shows the two children when they are older through a voice-over about the paranormal activity and the past. The trailer views the audience a picture which has been burned with fire around the child which seems to be clear.
It again, refers back to the family in the past in the kitchen laughing – again everything seems so normal.
The trailer then shows us the actress from Paranormal Activity 1+2 who had been possessed and it killed her bf. In part 2, she took the baby and ran away. This time the narrative tells us “the secret” which will be revealed if we watch part 3.
There is an extract from the part 3 showing the two girls as children in a room with a camera. They are then saying in the mirror three times “bloody mary” which may have provoked the ghost to interfere in their life. Who knows? – This is an open assumption made for the audience to think and to feel excited about the movie and to feel as if this movie has been a long, anticipated movie.
The trailer ends with static scenes giving a tenser ending and to feel more excited for the film and ends when the movie is going to be released which is in October.
This seems to be an effective trailer because it avoids and resolution or the ending because it leaves the audience to feel anticipated for it and it does not seem as an audience to feel like I have seen all the best bits.
Overall, the narrative is achieved through shots and a voice over. For example, when there was extracts from the family – time the voice over revealed the audience the family relation, names and what a typical family would do when spending quality time like “Katie, wave to the camera”. This reveals the audience what a typical/normal family would do when filming them. This links with the visuals of the shot because the trailer is viewing the children and the family time. Also, this sets up the narrative of the film as it is part of the “reality” and “normality” of what had happened to them was something unusual which creates the suspension and the tense atmosphere.
“I don’t remember anything”. This example of a voice over reveals that the two children as adults do not remember anything unusual. This automatically creates tense for the viewer therefore this should be considered as a good voice over because under the genre of horror it needs to create a tense and confused atmosphere. As a result who-ever enjoys this trailer may go and watch the movie later in October. This links with the visual because the trailer views us the children as adults and they were trying to remember what happened in the past which would have linked with the paranormal activity they go through. This sets up the narrative of the film because it is telling the viewers that they do not remember anything paranormal in the past which links with what is happening now for them.
“Remember the rules – say bloody Mary three times”. This dialogue instantly catches the audience attention due to the reason being as a myth by saying bloody Mary three times the ghost will appear in the mirror and will haunt you for the rest of your lives. It is bases on a story that if the Bloody Mary of Legend was beckoned it would then unleash an evil spirit from the past by chanting “Bloody Mary” into a mirror in a dark room with a candle. Maybe in this voice over the narrative has told us a bit too much in maybe why the ghost may have come to trouble them, but it could also be considered a good voice over. This is because of the myth of Bloody Mary and it has the power to spark imagination and the story used as a basis for the ghost stories.
The narrative order of the shots seems to be juggled around and not in a chronological order. But as the film is released in October 2011 I cannot really make an assumption on how it differs from the order in the trailer. But, generally all trailers are not really in chronological order. This is because the narrative of the trailer does not want to tell the whole story or reveal the best bits otherwise they would not get any audience to watch the film. As a result, I assume the trailer of Paranormal Activity shows different extracts from the movie to create more suspense and a reason why they should go and watch it.
There were 16 shots used in this trailer.
The pace of editing differs. From the beginning of the film the pace of editing is fair as it is using jump cuts to show the young children playing in the back garden. This helps to narrate the storyline and to quickly get to the point of which is supposed to create suspension for the viewers.
From 0:38 to 0:54 the pace of editing is fairly quick which builds up to the suspension from the beginning. Throughout this extract it shows bits and bobs from the movie which has scary bits and family time to create the adrenaline rush in which you would feel by watching this. As a result you would be feeling the need of wanting to watch the movie and see what is going to happen. After that, the editing pace slows down to the “bloody Mary” scene. This helps the audience to sustain their adrenaline rush into a fright! This seems to be a good tactic for trying to gain attention and with a little trailer it scares and frights the viewer.
There were static transitions used which gave off a good effect. This was to help to create the realism of the movie as it claims it was based on a true story therefore it helped to look like it was from a true story and the filming were actually real.
Also, there was a fade from white to black when the dad is filming presumably his daughters hula-hooping. The effect of this show in the concept of horror that they are in trouble or something bad is going to occur to his daughters. This probably was used to create pity for them as they are children and normal people and you could feel something bad is going to happen to them. As a result you are left feeling thinking what “bad” is going to happen to them and if they are going to ever survive.
The texts in the trailer are “This October” *clip* “Discover” *clip*”The Secret” *clip* “Behind the Activity” *clip* “Paranormal Activity 3”. This links with the visual in the movie because the trailer reveals some of the storyline which links with the text as the visual shows a part of something then the text goes with it. This is because the text then adds to the sequence. This sets up the narrative of the film because it is telling us the reason why this paranormal activity is occurring.
There is a soundtrack when the ghost or the person comes over to the camera in the bedroom. This helped create the genre of the film which is horror because as watching it, it gave me a scare and sort of spooked me.
Also, there is another soundtrack while the text reveals and it is some sort of dark sound. This instantly gave off the impression of tense and suspense which related to the genre as it is all about horror as it is trying to make the audience feel scared and ready to get frightened.
There is a medium shot of the young child jumping on the trampoline at the beginning of the film trailer. This is done to show the child playing normally and to imply everything seems to be normal and nothing is wrong. Also, it maybe is done to know what she is doing/saying and her interactions with other characters.
There is an extreme close up following from the family time of the ghost scaring the viewers. This is done to magnify the human eye would experience in reality. This was used to create a dramatic effect as at that very shot it frightens the viewers.
There is an establishing shot in the film used in where the mother is coming to check her baby toddler in his room. You could see a typical baby’s room with toys, crib and a baby. This is used to show the viewer one of the scary moments in the film and to show there is more to come.

Analysis of 'Total Film' magazine

Total Film is a well known film magazine. Looking at the magazine, the colours are very warm, as the colours that are in the magazine are, white, red, grey and black. All of these colours make the magazine look natural and warm, because they drag in the audience to see what film they are promoting today and also what they are going to talk about. The colour of the Masthead is White and because the font is big and bold this makes the masthead stand out and instantly the reader knows that this is a film magazine. Above the masthead there is some writing in red to show where films have gone up the chart and this is what reader's would want to see that's why it is in bold red and a big font and also above the mast head.

The straplines are in white and they are quite small but, they still catch your eye because of the different type of writing that has been used and the celebrity name's are in bold white, whereas the description about them and the film they are in is in a normal white colour. At the bottom of the magazine, the main film that the magazine is focusing on is Star Trek and this is in bold white and also in a big font, with the word world exclusive just above in red. This ultimately stands out and makes the reader/audience aware of what they are going to talk about and who the image of the man is.

The image of the man, is very simple and natural as it is black and white. There is direct contact with the eyes just staring at your drawing you in to read the magazine. Also, the way that the man is pouting is very sexual and dynamic and will mainly draw in girls and young women. Also, his eyebrows are very in and look tight and slightly scary as if he mans business and they certainly draw the reader in buying the magazine and having a look inside.

Looking at the magazine, I can see that the target audience will be people that are in their middle 20's to their 50's, because the magazine presents and shows nothing to a young audience and also as the film Star Trek is quite old, it really doesn't associate with young people and that is the same for the magazine.

Analysis of horror/thriller magazine 'Gorezone'

Gorezone is known to be the world's most up market horror entertainment magazine. Looking at the magazine, i can see that the colors that are used are red, blue, black and white. The masthead of the magazine is really bold and stands out, from the bold writing, big font, dark red color on the font and the black shadow. Also the name of the masthead, 'Gorezone' stands out by itself because the name shows that the magazine will have a lot of scary pictures and review of scary films.

The model on the front cover of the magazine has been made up to look like a scary and horrific character. This is due to the blood smudges that are on her clothes and face which shows that something has happened to her, and it looks like she has been attacked by something. The model has bold brown eyes that just stare at you and it gives the audience a really scary look.

The straplines contain name of actors and film names which are in red and they are bold. The actresses name is in bold and it is bigger than the other straplines to show that she is in this certain film. The actor's names are in light blue and they are different to the other straplines on the magazine, this gives credit to the actors.

Looking at the magazine I can see that the target audience will be mainly teenage to late 20's/early 30's. This is because the magazine, font, colours and the image itself draws attention to these types of people and associates them, especially as this magazine is promoting a horror film as mainly young people are interested in this type of movie.

Analysis of Insidious Poster

The film 'Insidious' is a horror/thriller film.

The poster of Insidious is simple and there is not a lot going on. This is because the poster contains the films name, the website of the film, the release date, the slogan 'it's not the house that's haunted'. The poster only contains one picture which is of the main character the possessed child and the background is the house which the characters in the film think is haunted. This picture and the slogan gives an insight of what the film is going to be about. The poster also contains the production information, for example the actors, actressess and the name of the directors and producers. The production information and the style of it makes the poster seem realisitc, thus it looks like a real film poster.

As it is a horror/thriller poster there is not much color, and there are no bright colors in the poster as well. The main colors in the poster are black, white and red. The color black compliments the horror/thriller theme well because it is dark and when people see the color black they automatically think negative and scary thoughts. The red could symbolise the blood and danger that is going to happen to the family. The color white is a color that is not bright and that you can't see well. This shows that it is hard for the family to catch the ghost that is inside the boy because they cannot see it. And if you can't see the ghost it is even more scary because you do not know when it is with you or when it is going to come and harm you.

The target audience of the film Insidious is also fifteen and above. This is because it contains scenes that are scary and may scare anyone under this age.

Analysis of Grudge 3 Poster

The film 'Grudge 3' is a horror/thriller film and it is part of two other films 'Grudge' and 'Grudge 2'. The target audience of this film are people who are interested in horror/thriller films and who like a lot of violence and supernatural happenings.

The main colors in the Grudge 3 poster are red, white and black. The color red could symbolise the blood, there is also blood on the ghost's hair. This could show that the ghost or spirit is going to kill people brutally and there is going to be a lot of blood. There is also a small boy tangled in the ghost's hair, this shows that it does not matter how old you are because the ghost will attack anyone that gets in their way. The ghost's color is white, this shows that she may look normal like a human but she has evil motives. The black could show that the ghost get's people easily on her side which is the dark side, and no one can return from the dark side.

The main image on the poster is of the main ghost that kills many people in the film. The image only shows half of her face, and it only shows one of her eye that is red. Her red eye could show how evil she is because she is taking away innocent lives. The boy that is tangled in her hair could show how she takes away innocent lives.

This poster also has a slogan which is 'the curse continues'. This could suggest that the ghost or the spirit that has been killing people and has not stopped, it is still continuing, and this gives an insight of what the audience should expect in this film.

From looking at the poster, the target audience of the film is fifteen and above, this film is for people who are interested in horror/thriller films and who like a lot of violence and supernatural happenings. This is because the film contains a lot of blood scenes, because on the poster a lot of blood is shown. The Grudge seems like a scary film, which may startle and scare anyone under this age.
